Choosing the Right Website Builder for You
The Creator's Guide to Websites (3/3)
You are an artist or a small business owner with a service people truly need. You know you need a digital home. But the moment you start looking into how to build it, you hit a wall of logos: Framer, Wix, Squarespace, WordPress, Cargo, and so many more. The list feels endless. If you feel like you are spending more time comparing features than actually creating your work, you are not alone.
I tried them all before I started offering web design services. I even coded my own portfolio website from scratch. Through that process, I found my favorites. Here is my honest, slightly opinionated guide to help you stop searching and start building.
1. The "Ultimate Design Freedom" Choice: Framer
Best for: Artists, designers, modern small businesses, and marketing campaigns where you have some design experience.
I will be transparent: Framer is my primary tool. Because it is the only, and best builder that actually feels like a design tool.
Feature: It is perfect if you want a site that feels premium and unique.
Usage: It gives you the best design freedom, whether you want an experimental look or a professional one. However, if you are not familiar with Figma or general design principles, there is a learning curve.
Templates: The platform is relatively new, but there are already great templates available to make your website look professional.
Price: Recently, it has become cheaper than many other options. You can check the latest rates here.
2. The "I Need to Manage It Easily" Choice: Squarespace
Best for: Small business owners who need specific functions like forms, e-commerce, or scheduling.
Feature: Honestly, I do not recommend this for artist portfolios because I find the templates lacking for that specific need. But if you own a small business, work as a personal coach, or run a design studio, it is a solid choice.
Usage: It is easy to build using their templates, but you will have limited design freedom. It is a good option for e-commerce when you do not have many products to sell. If you have a massive inventory, you should go for Shopify instead.
3. The "I Need Complex Features" Choice: Wix Studio
Best for: Clients who need specific built-in tools like complex booking systems or a high volume of blog content.
I will be honest: I am generally not a fan of the standard Wix. But Wix Studio, which is their professional grade platform, is a different tool. I only suggest this if your business requires the deep all-in-one infrastructure Wix provides. This includes things like specialized scheduling, complex CMS systems, or a high amount of content.
4. The "Static Website" Choice
Best for: People who do not need to update their website often, such as simple landing pages or local company websites.
If you run a local business and your website content does not need constant updates, a static site is a great move. It helps with SEO and Google search rankings. The only fee you usually need to pay is for your domain. There are many great AI tools now to help build these, but it still takes knowledge to make the design stable and customized to your needs. Once it is built, it is safe and strong.
Why You Won't See Me Building on WordPress
You might be wondering why the world’s most popular builder is not on my list. To put it simply: I do not make WordPress sites. For a small business owner or an artist, WordPress is often a trap. It requires constant plugin updates, security monitoring, and a steep learning curve.
For example, if you Google a local nail shop that has a website, most of the time I see they are built with WP. You often find the site looks ancient or is filled with ads as if it was hacked. That is the reality of an unmaintained WordPress site.
Which one is perfect for you?
To save you the time you would spend watching a dozen "Top 10" YouTube videos, use this quick cheat sheet:
Platform | Best For | Main Benefit |
Framer | Artists and Modern Brands | Total design freedom and a high-end feel. |
Squarespace | Service Businesses | Easy management for forms and basic e-commerce. |
Wix Studio | Complex Infrastructure | Deep CMS and specialized business tools. |
Static Site | Local Businesses | Low cost, high security, and great for SEO. |
The Bottom Line
Your website is your digital storefront. It should reflect the quality of your work, whether that is a painting or a professional service. Most of the time, a fast, beautiful website is exactly what you need to get results without the technical bloat.
